Audi. The name rolls off the tongue. Audi. It has the ‘awe’ sound in it.

And what’s the crème de la crème of this top brand name? Ask Tony Stark. You know, Tony Stark aka IronMan?

The ultimate driving experience, the Audi R8, is IronMan’s car. As it should be, after all Mr. Stark is a billionaire. And while the Bentleys and the Austin Martins are yelling out “Rich! Rich guy here, look at me!” the quiet, sleek pinnacle of automotive technology is whispering seductively, “Relax, settle in, we own this road.”

From the outside the R8 looks more aggressive than the old A line Audis. The style is more Porsche-like, more like the fast sports car she is. Smooth and clean-lined, sure. The sort of car that when the busty model lays across it for the publicity shot, you wish she would just move so you could see the car better.

Audi has managed to stay just shy of the line that too many others cross. You know the line– the one that says, “I am a balding, middle-aged wannabe.”

When this baby pulls up, you aren’t going to know ahead of time if Brad or Angelina is going to step out. It’s one for the boys as well as the girls. Sports car with comfort. Two cars in one.

The R8 doesn’t flaunt her power. The rear spoiler is retractable. It’s only when you ease into the cocooned interior that you suddenly know without doubt that you are somewhere special, somewhere reserved for the elite. Not cramped. Audis always have lots of room, but designed. Everything is right where it should be, you feel, well, embraced.

How much of a fast sports car is the R8? Well, 4.4 seconds to 60 MPH is pretty good on a 4.2L V-8 engine. And the 6-speed manual transmission takes you from there up to the top speed of 187 miles per hour.

Fast sports car? Yep.

But I digress. We were talking about the interior– the interior says luxury in the functional, highly tweaked engineering excellence way that is the company’s hallmark. When you sit behind the wheel of the R8, especially at night (and after all the seat and steering wheel movement as the car automatically adjusts to your preferences)– you are bathed in the glow from the wraparound instrument package of the cockpit. It feels like a single-seater; like a race car/high-end sports car should. The flat-bottomed steering wheel points up that this is going to be a unique ride.

Are there amenities?

This is Audi, of course there are.

Automatic climate control, leather seats and a seven (yes, seven) speaker CD sound system. The 6-CD changer comes with the option package along with blue tooth connectivity and auto dimming rearview mirrors. Oh, and cup holders are standard.

So, everyone wants to know– How’s the ride?

There’s the Quattro all wheel drive, of course, and midengine (as opposed to a rear engined Porche) with a long wheelbase and wide tires gives superior stability. On top of this, there are electro magnetically controlled shocks. These are engineering marvels, the viscosity of the fluid in the shocks changes based on current/charge applied through it.
