The Real Value of a Good Domain Name

February 21st, 2008 · 2 Comments

If you want to be successful, using the internet as a primary resource for new clients or customers, you’ve got to make sure people can find you.

And that all starts with your domain name.

Internet commerce is a gold mine for most companies, because the internet allows business to happen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In today’s digital age, consumers expect to find just about everything online, one click of the mouse away.

Here are some solid domain selection tips to help you make sure you can be found online so you don’t miss your stake in the online marketplace.

Three Qualities of a Good Domain

If you want to thrive with an online business, your domain name should:

1. Be easy to remember, and easy to find. The best domain names are short, clever, and easy to spell.

2. Suggest the nature of your business, service or product that you offer. You want to be clever, but not misleading. If the name of your business does not clearly state what you do, consider using a domain name that highlights a special feature or your best selling product. Something consumers will find when using internet search engines, which we will cover in just a bit.

3. Act as a strong trademark. You don’t want your competitors to use a similar domain name, diverting clients that should be yours, to their website. Customer confusion can lead them to purchase products that are similar to yours, from someone else.

Domain Names and SEO

Search engines like Yahoo and Google are often the first place folks head when trying to locate a product, company, or service on the web.

Let’s say I’m looking for vitamin supplements to boost my immune system. I go to Google and type in a search for “immune system supplements”. I get more than 150,000 results.

Naturally, I’m going to focus on the first page of results to save time, and I’ll go with the first online vendor I come across that seems to offer the product I want, in the price range I want.

One of the first results I get is for a website: www.VitaminWorld.com. The domain is clear and I can easily see that this company offers a variety of vitamins, and most likely supplements. I click through and find what I’m looking for in just a minute or so. Again, the domain name made it clear what the website sells, taking out any guess work for the end user.

There are two things to consider here…

One, the domain name clearly indicated the products that VitaminWorld.com offers. The name serves for effective SEO, also known as search engine optimization.

And secondly, because the site owner submitted their domain name into the search engine, they came up in my results.

The domain name you choose is important, but it’s not enough to choose a clever domain, you must also build a user friendly website, and then promote it.

You have to submit the domain to search engines or your website will simply sit in cyberspace, without any web traffic. That’s not going to make you any sales!

Long Term Value of Good Domains

A domain name is one important way companies of all sizes build their brand and increase consumer’s knowledge of their products in the marketplace.

It’s a simple equation: More awareness, More visitors, More sales.

Include your domain name in all of your marketing materials, put it in your outgoing emails, get the awareness out there. Submit your domain name to search engines.

Bottom Line: If your domain name is concise and easy to remember you are sure to capture a big slice of the eCommerce pie.

You are so right - chosing the right domain is so important.

Sometimes I have chosen them with too many characters but they get the point across - such as the following, which is not yet live http://www.startafashiondesignbusiness.com - it’s clear what it is about but some of my other domains leave a lot to be desired.
