Why Jamaica Is Suddenly Possible

May 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Retire to Jamaica? Is it possible?

For the successful domainer, it certainly is. But you don’t have to wait till you retire, domain name reselling is online, remember?

You can live anywhere there’s a solid Internet connection, and Jamaica qualifies.

So how much is property on this island paradise? Well, for whoever sold Pizza.com for $2.6 million might want to put a down payment on a nice castle, available for $7 million (firm). The rest of us would probably be looking a little lower; perhaps an oceanfront condo at $760,000 fits your budget better. Still too much? You can’t beat $156,000 for a four-bedroom house in a gated community. (And your heating costs are nil!)

If you haven’t yet been to the Caribbean, you ought to go. There’s no way to describe all that makes Jamaica an island paradise. Clear blue skies, sunny days and warm nights, ocean breezes and the distant sound of steel drums? None of that does the place justice. White sandy beaches, beautiful people (yes, your favorite movie star probably vacations there), lush jungle and towering mountains…

The ocean here is cool on hot days and warm at night. If you like sailing, snorkeling or diving, Jamaica is a natural for you. On the other hand, if history is your thing there are loads of places on the island to visit. Since it’s discovery in 1494 by Christopher Columbus, Europeans have continuously occupied the island. Independent from Britain in 1958 (and fully independent in 1962), Jamaica still retains vestiges of its English past. English is the dominant language here, which makes it especially nice for US retirees.

Live where others only vacation

Remember, when you live there, the places that people crave for vacations are just across the way. For instance, Negril. Negril, on the west coast draws tourists because of its seven-mile stretch of sandy beach and westward, sunset view. Popularized in the 60’s and 70’s by hippies (maybe it was the Rastafarian lifestyle?) who recognized paradise when they saw it, it’s now a stop for tourists visiting the Negril lighthouse. Walk the beach, catch some rays and enjoy local rums.

Want to stick around when everyone else has to get back to the boat?

Ocho Rios (Eight Rivers) is the cruise capital of the island. There’s a sheltered bay and all the amenities cruise ships require. As an ex-pat, you can enjoy the restaurants, discos (oh, yes– discos), clubs, shops and all the rest. Natural beauty gives Ocho Rios its reputation. Soaring jungle-covered mountains and the protection of an offshore reef (did I mention SCUBA?) as well as the famous 600-foot waterfall (Dunns River) that you’ve seen in countless movies.

As a ‘new native’ you get to cruise the winding coastal roads– cliffs that drop down to the ocean and breathtaking views.

Retire in style

It may seem like a crude calculation, but when your money has a great exchange rate ($1 US to $69), your retirement dollar goes a lot farther. Some of the benefits of this include maid service, great food at a low price and generally raising your status from middle to upper class. When you are a local, you don’t have to get caught up in the tourist-inflated prices. It’s a definite plus when you’re on a fixed retirement.

I’m not actually recommending the castle I started out with (and all those prices were in USD). But why not live in an island paradise?

You can live anywhere you want when you run a virtual business, and retiring in Jamaica suddenly becomes an option.
